Carbon Trading & Consultation
South Africa has implemented the Carbon Tax as a fiscal policy instrument to reduce the nation's carbon footprint. Under Section 19 of the Carbon Tax Act, the regulations of the Carbon Offset Mechanism are stipulated. The Carbon Offset Mechanism was included in the Carbon Tax Act as one of the allowances to reduce the Carbon Tax liability of taxable entities. The Carbon Tax allows the buying of Verified Carbon Offset Certificates to reduce tax liability. As stipulated in the regulations of Section 19, the only Cabon Offsets currently recognised by SARS are those which have been registered and verified by one of the following Carbon Offset Mechanisms:
Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)
Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS)
Gold Standard (GS)
